Some of you may have noticed that Mark Zuckerberg is altering the Facebook algorithm to prioritise postings from friends and family over posts from businesses, musicians, and media outlets.
Now, if you’re in a band, you might be concerned because, for the past four or five years, we’ve been told that if you want to sell your music on social media, mainly Facebook, you need to post organically, do so frequently, and you’ll engage your fan base. This is going to be more difficult now.
But here’s the thing: there’s a catch. It was three years ago when this happened.
The same thing happened on Facebook.
They modified the algorithm, and many individuals were enraged because they realised they weren’t reaching as many people as before, and they blamed Facebook for being such a selfish corporation. While this may be correct, there is a more rational reason.
On Facebook, there is far too much content being created. Everyone is sharing everything: films, photos, posts, and anything else.
When you go onto Facebook, there are over 2,000 different stories that could appear on your newsfeed at any given time.
So, in order to improve your experience in their perspective, Facebook filters all of these things in order to make it more delightful for you.
Above all, Facebook’s purpose is for people to continue to use the platform. They don’t want consumers to become tired of using it and go to another provider. So that’s why they’re changing things.
So, what are your options now?
To be honest, we’ve arrived at a point where you must approach your band like if it were any other small business, and you must pay for promotion.
I’m not talking about paying for Facebook boost posts since you’ll be squandering your money if you don’t put it up right.
I’m talking about working with the business manager to create a real Facebook ad campaign and learning how to market because, let’s face it, you’re operating a small business, and marketing is a big part of that.
You should learn how to use Facebook marketing if you want to expand your fan base and sell your music and merchandise.
Because your organic posts aren’t going to be as effective, now is the time to do it.
Three years ago, they were ineffective. They’ll be less effective as time goes on. So, you know, they are some of the things you might start learning right now.
